There are certain problems associated with internal ultrasonic liposuction and they are mostly related to the cannula. The first and second generation cannula could cause skin damage and because of the ultrasonic vibrations, cannula have been know to break and leave pieces in patients that had to be removed surgically. Also because of the ultrasonic vibrations, the cannula can overheat and damage skin tissue and nerve damage.

Even by using wet or tumescent techniques there is still a risk of the cannula overheating and causing damage. Any use of water or solutions will decrease the possibility of overheating. Even though the wet method uses fluid, it is not the same as the tumescent method. A Klein tumescent solution is used and the area to be liposuctioned is filled until swollen.

External Ultrasonic Liposuction is like the name implies, done externally against the skin. The area to be liposuctioned is filled with fluid, then shaken by the sound waves of a vibrating hand piece. In order to be effective the energy needed to break up fat cells from outside the skin is excessive. If not used properly the external ultrasonic liposuction devices can burn the skin. Using an external device takes more of the surgeons time to properly break up the fat cells and therefore may not be the preferred procedure for many surgeons because of the extra time involved to be done properly and safely.

Sometimes the gels and creams used on the skin in order for the external ultrasonic liposuction device to pass smoothly over the skin have been known to cause allergic reactions in some patients.

There are different types of abdominal fat. visceral fat is inside the abdominal cavity and not directly under the skin, liposuction may not be able to safely remove visceral fat because of the risk of blood loss, nerve damaged and punctured organs because of the increased risk. Beer bellies, typically are mostly visceral fat. Intra-abdominal fat is the fat directly under the skin and liposuction is a great solution for intra-abdominal fat in men.

The healing process after liposuction in men differs slightly from women. Recovery from any liposuction procedure varies with the individual. In most cases a man can return to work in one or two weeks. Men with more strenuous jobs will want to take up to four weeks to recover. Swelling and bruising can take a month and up to six months or longer to completely heal and disappear.
